She has worked in emergency medicine but mostly enjoys working in a small animal private practice setting.  She enjoys working with patients and educating clients but her biggest enjoyment is leading her amazing team at a small animal private practice.  She has managed a practice for over 12 years and has enjoyed teaching and learning beside her team.  She enjoys continuing her education in many areas of veterinary medicine and then sharing and expanding that knowledge with other technicians. In her free time, you will find her traveling with her family, reading, or enjoying her time at home on her hobby farm with her family and their many pets. She is excited to be a part of the MAVT and to be a voice for Licensed Veterinary Technicians.

Vice-President:

Megan Sorensen, LVT

There’s never been a time in my life I could see myself not working or being a part of veterinary medicine. I started college at GVSU in their Pre-Vet Program, when I was home doing summer classes at MCC I discovered the veterinary technician program. As I became more aware as to what a vet tech was and their job responsibilities, I decided that was what I was passionate about. I graduated from the Macomb Community College Veterinary Technician Program in 2018. I started my career in a specialty hospital working in the Surgery, Emergency, and Internal Medicine departments. In April of 2022 I left clinical practice and am currently working as a technician recruiter. My current role allows me to make connections with veterinary technicians nationwide, go to state and national conferences, travel to veterinary technician programs to present trivia, RACE presentations as well as give advice about my experience in the veterinary field. I am a certified fear free, BLS/ALS Rescuer, and a BLS/ALS RECOVER instructor. I am a mom to the most wonderful boy, but I am obligated to say that! My hobbies including being a bookworm, a photographer, and an outdoorsy person. I volunteer with a local animal rescue and have had 38 fosters since 2020. I am so excited to be apart of the MAVT and support our profession which is more important now than ever!

Past President:

Joy Thompson,  LVT

Throughout her veterinary career, Joy has worked in shelter medicine, emergency medicine, and small animal private practice, and volunteered with area wildlife rehabilitation centers. Eight years ago, she realized her dream of working in zoo medicine and is currently employed as a Technician at the Detroit Zoo. She loves the opportunity it provides to learn something new, each day, as well as sharing her passion for zoo medicine with others. Joy holds a Bachelor's degree in Communications from University of Michigan – Dearborn, an Associate of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology from Wayne County Community College, and is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Conservation Biology through Miami University. In her spare time, Joy enjoys live music, reading, birding, kayaking, cross stitch, and spending time with her husband, two beagles, and special needs cats.

Recording Secretary:

Samantha Lookliss, LVT

recsecmavt@gmail.com

I earned my A.A.S in Veterinary Technology at the Vet Tech Institute of Bradford in Columbus, Ohio in 2019 and became certified shortly after back home in Michigan. My passion in veterinary medicine is educating clients about the pet’s individual care and/or conditions because of how much it truly means to them to take the time to help them understand what is going on with their furry kids. I also enjoy helping fellow veterinary professionals learn and expand their knowledge so they can grow within their position to whatever they dream of. In my free time I enjoy reading, cross stitching and embroidery, and playing video games. I currently share my life with my fiance Logan, two cats named Harvest and Loki, and a ferret named Onix.

Treasurer:

Amy Fath, LVT, CVPM

Fourteen years ago, she found her home at Gratiot Animal Hospital in Saginaw; here she moved into a management role and received her CVPM. She is also Fear Free and Human Animal Bond certified. Amy is a member of AAHA, VHMA, NAVTA, and the Mid-Michigan Labrador Retriever Club. Amy lives with her husband and has five grown children, one granddaughter, and a grandson on the way! She is the proud owner of Bad River Labradors, where she raises, trains, and competes with her dogs. In her free time, she loves spending time with friends and family, hiking and kayaking with her dogs, and is an avid UofM Football, Red Wings, and Lions fan!

Member At Large:

Carol Hudecek, LVT

mavtmemberatlarge@gmail.com

My name is Carol Hudecek, and I am happy to fill the member-at-large position for the Michigan Association of Veterinary Technicians. I grew up on a farm in Indiana and have had a love for animals my entire life. I was a 10 year 4-H member and raised rabbits. I have been a credentialed Veterinary Technician since 2008 and moved to Michigan in 2009. Since then I have worked in small animal practice and taught anesthesia and surgery labs in the Veterinary Technology Program at Baker College in Jackson from 2012-2020. In 2022 I left clinic life to pursue a wonderful opportunity with Vetamac Anesthesia. I know have the privilege of going into veterinary clinics and research facilities all over Michigan and servicing/repairing anesthesia machines, troubleshooting anesthetic cases, and helping new build/renovation designs and equipment purchases. It has been a wonderful opportunity to meet doctors and technicians throughout the state. It is rewarding to help with their immediate anesthesia needs/problems and connect with colleagues in my profession.

As Veterinary Technicians we have a unique opportunity every day to improve people’s lives by improving the life of their pet and strengthening the human-animal bond. It is something to be extremely proud of, however, many times technicians feel unappreciated in this industry. It is my desire that this position will help me to be an advocate for Veterinary Technicians throughout the state.

President Elect:

Samantha Johnsonbaugh, LVT, CVPM

presidentelectmavt@gmail.com

As most of us in veterinary medicine, my love started at a young age. I started my college career at Michigan State University to become a veterinarian. After deep diving into vet med and getting to see the different roles, I quickly felt drawn to becoming a veterinary technician. I graduated from Macomb Community College Veterinary Technician Program in 2003. While in school I worked at a cat’s only clinic as a kennel attendant. Since becoming licensed, I have worked in both day practice and emergency medicine. I have worked with exotics and taught clinical pathology to vet tech students at Macomb. In 2015 I started my first practice manager position and earned my CVPM in August 2022. I am also BLS/ALS Recover Certified. In my free time, I love reading, quilting and bowling. I have two dalmatians Howey and Oysters and two cats Cinnamon and Winifred. I am excited to be apart of MAVT and to help support this amazing profession!
